The US Government declares 9th of Feb as “Gulf of America Day”, changing the name of Gulf of Mexico.

Trump has finally changed the name of Gulf Of Mexico to Gulf Of America and marked 9th feb as Gulf Of America Day”. The Proclamation was signed on 9 February, Sunday, while flying over

The renamed region. In the  video shared by Trump on social media Trump says “signing the proclamation while flying over the renamed region will be appropriate.”

Time period of 30 days has been given to the US secretary of the interior to formalise the change. Trump said that this change recognises the gulf’s historical and economic importance to the US nation and past disputes with Mexico over tariffs and Border negotiation.

For some people the news isn’t shocking because this is not the first time Trump tried to change the  name of any place; previously he sought to rename Mount Denali North America’s highest peak mountain to Mount Mckinley. Trump also said  that the U.S does the most work on the Gulf so he insisted that this region should have America’s name.

But can he or any President of any country actually bring this big change like renaming the whole water body. So its answer is YES but with limits because the Gulf is an International water body shared by three regions the US , Mexico , Cuba that means the change only applies to America. Other countries and regions are independent to accept this change or not. It is also the same for private companies like Google and Apple. It is up to them to accept this change or not.

However Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pardo strongly opposed the Private Company Google to think again before renaming the Gulf of Mexico which is 400 years old on its maps.

Important observations:

  1. Legal Feasibility: This change holds legal ground only in the US. It is totally up to the other nations to accept this or reject the name change.
  2. International Relations:This could  make a huge impact between Mexico and US relations in a very bad way like its domestic policies and foreign diplomacy.
  3. Online Impact: This change will show the power of digital platforms in shaping the geographical narratives like recently Google removed Palestine from its Map. This will also influence people’s perception and usage of new name.
  4. Action Taken by authority of US in response: 30 days time which is given to the Secretary Department of interior shows the immediate actions prompted by this proclamation.
  5. History of Trump’s Presidency: Trump’s Previous attempt to rename Mount Denali back to Mount Mckinley shows a wide pattern in his presidency of seeking to reshape American landmarks in the name of making America Great again.
